Thank you for your subscription to North of the Blue. Here is the information you need to download your North of the Blue Program.
We will email you should have received your Activation Key when you subscribed to our free trial. Please note that the first 10 spaces of the key contain only alphabetical characters or dashes. The final four spaces contain only numerals.
We have had sever questions from users asking if they can set up our North of the Blue programming on more than one computer. The answer is "Yes". But, you need to tell us first that you are doing this or some of the programs will not work all of the time. We are very happy to have you keep our program at your fingertips. The caveat is that you or someone in your household must own the computers. I know that I'm preaching to the choir, but please do not allow your Activation Key to be used by others, no matter what your relationship is with them. We agree to do business with you, not your neighbors and friends unless, of course, they subscribe also.
Here are the download and installation directions. Don’t let them intimidate you; they only take about 5 minutes to run. Please call or email us if you have any questions or problems.
- This entire process should take less than five minutes.
- Our programming will not run on older MACs. We have not found a satisfactory compiler for this. But, it will run just fine on the newer MACs with the OS X operation system. That's the one that allows you to run Microsoft Window's "exe" programs.
- Locate the letter we sent you with your Activation Key. If you cannot locate it don't worry, the world will not end. Just call us and give us your name and address and we'll give you the Activation Key on the phone.
- Turn off your "Popup Blocker" on your computer and either turn off your firewall or tell your security system that "www.northoftheblue.com" is a "Trusted Site". Make sure that you have an active connection to the Internet because your computer must correspond with ours during the installation process.
- From our home page go to the download section on the bottom right hand corner of the page. Click on "Download North of the Blue" or ""Download North of he Blue for Microsoft's VISTA Operating System" depending on which operating system you use.
- This brings up a popup window called “File Download – Security Warning Do you want to
run or save this file NorthoftheBlue_A.exe.exe?” Click on the “Run” button.
- Now you're faced with another popup window called “Internet Explorer Security Warning. The publisher could not be verified …” Click on the “Run” button.
- The next window is “WinZip Self Extractor Window”. Check that the folder to which the program will unzip is “C:\NorthoftheBlue_ A\”. Click on the ‘Unzip” button.
- This will give you a window telling you that seven or eight (either is just fine since you only need seven of the files to make the program work) files unzipped successfully. Click on the “Okay”button.
- Now click on the "Close" or "Finished" button to leave the WinZip programs. They are used only to package our programming and allow faster and simpler downloads and instillation.
- Now click on "Start", "My Computer" and then on the "Local Disk (C:)" folder. Go down the list of contents in the folder until you find a directory called "NorthoftheBlue_ A" and click on this directory. Here you'll see the seven or eight programs you downloaded. The one you are interested in is "NorthoftheBlue_A.exe".
- Set your display to show "Details" by clicking on the Window's picture on the right hand side of the top bar.
- Highlight and delete the existing program called "Shortcut to NorthoftheBlue_A.exe". You will recreate it for your machine in the next step. If you do not find this shortcut, that means that we removed it from the package of files you downloaded.
- Now right click on the file "NorthoftheBlue_A.exe" select “Create Shortcut”. This
creates a new file that is a shortcut to start the program. Drag this file to the Window’s desktop and rename it as you like. Another choice is offered which allows you to "Pin [this file] to start menu". You can select this and the program will always appear on your Start Menu, which appears whenever you click on the "Start" button.
- Close the “My Computer” screen.
- Double click on the shortcut you just created to start the programming.
- The first time you run North of the Blue a screen will open called “NOTB Software License Agreement” Read the agreement. If you agree to it and want to use our software, please click on “Yes, I agree”.
- The next screen will prompt you for your Activation Key. Enter the Activation Key above in capital letters and then click on the “Log On” button. The first ten spaces of the Activation Key contain only letters or dashes. The final four spaces contain only numbers, usually nines. As I said, you only need to do this the first time you start our programming. After that we take care of all of this for you. Should you receive an error the first place to check is to make sure that you have a live connection to the Internet and North of the Blue can use this connection. Please adjust your security software to allow our programming to exchange data with our server.
- Double click again on the shortcut or the menu if you "Pinned" the program to your menu.
- Now click on the “Log On” button on North of the Blue’s logon screen.
- You are taken to a screen with a picture of an aircraft landing in a warm, sunny part of a country. To the right is the question "So ... have you arrived yet?" At the top left of the page are three choices, "Administration", "Stock Charts", and "Exit". Select "Stock Charts".
- The drop down window under "Stock Charts" offers two choices, "17 Month Overview" and "Channel Analysis". Click on "Channel Analysis".
- The Channel Analysis window is labeled with the version number at the upper left. It should be "Channel Analysis Ver 3.1.2". There are two blank windows at the top of the page one labeled "Symbol" and the other labeled "Lists". To begin, type any valid stock symbol into the "Symbol" window. Use "ABX", for instance. This is the symbol for Barrick Gold Corp. Now you are looking at a North of the Blue Stock Chart.
- To use one of our pre built lists, go to the "List" window and click on the drop down arrow on the right side of the window. Select and click on "ETFS" --a collection of Exchange Traded Funds "ETFS" for various market sectors. This brings up a list of the stocks that make up the ETF. The first stock to come up and build a chart is "BDH", Broadband Holders. You can click on the drop down arrow next to the "Symbol" window. This provides you with a list of stocks that make up the ETF. You can highlight any of the members of this list and click on it to bring up its chart. If you just want to browse through the charts, use the "Prev Stk" and "Next Stk" buttons at the bottom of the page.
- If you want to see what the price of the stock was on a given day, put your cursor on the heavy black price line in the upper chart panel. The information for that day will appear on the bottom of the chart just under the volume information. For example, select the ETFS and look at the first stock that is brought up in the "Symbol" window. Now click on the black price line just to the left of the vertical red bars in July. Depending on where you click you will get a date in July with the "Open", "High", "Low", "Volume", "Close" and "Price Change" for that day. I selected Monday July 6, 2009, the date at which the stock price turned from black (black symbolizing a price above our Blue Moving Average Line" and red symbolizing a price below our Blue Moving Average Line" to red.The line under the volume reads: " Monday July 6, 2009 Open $11.09 High $11.24 Low $12.36 Volume 122% (which means that the volume is 122% of normal volume) Close $12.39 BDH -0.35 ( "0.35" is preceded by a minus sign and is in red to tell us that the stock went down 35 cents on that day"). It is as if you were there.
- If you want to check the price on another date or period, delete what is in the "End Date" window at the bottom of the page. Type in, for example, 01/01/1997 as the end date. Now click on the "Show" button. This will give you a chart showing the eight months preceding January 1, 1997.
- In the volume window blue bars indicate days in which there were more buys than sells. Red bars indicate just the opposite, more sells than buys. If the bar is yellow, it indicates that we did not receive reliable volume information from the firm that provides us with our data.
- Our stock windows are "demand" windows. They are updated to the latest intraday trade whenever you click on the "Show" window. The prices are current as of the most recent information published by an exchange. The NYSE, for example, normally runs ten to fifteen minutes behind the most recent trade so any chart done by any company cannot be more accurate than that trade. When we get an intraday quote, the chart will update to that trade whenever you click on the "Show" button.
- To build your understanding of the stock, please go to our web site, www.northoftheblue.com and click on "My Account" button in the upper right hand part of the page. On the "My Account" page read your way through the "Education" tutorials in the top, middle of the page. You may want to print these out to use as reminders during the first few weeks you use the account.
- Use the education information to help you understand the charts you find.
- If you would like to see the chart displayed larger, please go to the "Start" button on your computer (bottom left corner), go up to "Control" and then click on the "Display" selection. The menu this brings up offers several choices. Select the "Settings" tab and move the arrow as far to the left as you can. This will give you a screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels. The chart was written for this screen resolution. Use this while you are working with North of the Blue charts and then reset the resolution of whatever settings you originally had.
- Please don't hesitate to call us if you have any problems. Our Technical Support can be reached at 503.233.9452 or 503.926.7567 between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. We are often in the office on Saturday mornings and will answer the phone if we are. Please give us a try. In the event of an emergency, you can reach the person with the pager by dialing 503.702.9535.

You may find an “Error 8” displayed. This occurs when North of the Blue cannot communicate with our server. Please adjust your security software to allow our programming to exchange data with our server.
Our programming was written for screen resolutions of 800 x 600 pixels. If you are using a larger resolution the chart will shrink and fill only about one half of the screen. Most users elect to use the chart this way. If you want a clearer and larger chart, you can click on the program you downloaded titled "NorthoftheBlue_1.bat" This starts a program called MultiRes that adjusts your screen to 800 x 600 pixel resolution while North of the Blue is running and then resets the screen to your existing setting when you close North of the Blue. The alternative, of course, is to go to your "Start" button, click there, then click on "Control Panel" and then on "Display". Click on the very last tab labeled "Settings" and move your Screen Resolution to "Less". After you have done that click on the "Test" button. If all is well, click on "Apply". Remember, you will now have to reset your screen when you finish using North of the Blue. As for me, I leave resolution at 800 x 600 all the time to make life easier for my tiered old eyes.
Please feel free to call or email us at the address above if
you have any questions or problems.
